Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we learned of the passing of William Leon McBride, a distinguished philosopher, devoted colleague, and long-standing friend of the Armenian philosophical community.

Professor McBride was the Arthur G. Hansen Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Purdue University and a leading figure in contemporary social and political philosophy. He served as President of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies ((2008-2013), as well as President of the North American Society for Social Philosophy and the Société Américaine de Philosophie de Langue Française. He co-founded and directed the North American Sartre Society, leaving an enduring mark on Sartre studies and existentialist scholarship worldwide.

A Fulbright Scholar in France and later a Fulbright Visiting Lecturer in Bulgaria, Professor McBride received numerous international honors, including being named Chevalier of the French Ordre des Palmes Académiques and receiving the Silver Medal of the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences for his outstanding contribution to philosophy.

His scholarly legacy is vast and influential. He authored, edited, or co-edited nineteen books and published more than 250 articles, chapters, and reviews. Among his most important works are Sartre’s Political Theory, Social and Political Philosophy, Philosophical Reflections on the Changes in Eastern Europe, From Yugoslav Praxis to Global Pathos, and the eight-volume collection Sartre and Existentialism. His early book The Philosophy of Marx continues to be widely read and was recently republished.

Professor McBride was not only a renowned scholar but also a warm supporter of international philosophical cooperation. He had been planning to visit Armenia in the near future as part of the FISP presidency, to participate in a number of events, including the conferences “Trust and Hope in Times of Crisis” and those dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Academician Georg Brutian. Therefore, his passing is felt with particular sorrow by the Armenian Philosophical Academy and the Armenian philosophical community, who had been looking forward to welcoming him.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, students, and friends around the world. His intellectual legacy, human warmth, and commitment to philosophical dialogue will remain an inspiration for generations to come.
